For Jana
I don't know if its my place to write something, but I feel compelled to. And i'd like to stick to what I found so important about her and the magazine she founded. As the world that I used to know of music continues to fade, there are already far too few people who dare to speak openly about music they love...or even the music they dislike. Most of us are content to maybe like something on Facebook and be done with it. We're probably so fed up with it all we don't have an opinion anymore. Who starts a fucking magazine to talk about music they love? Or even music they want to speak about in a critical sense? There is almost NO music journalism anymore.
But Jana was different. It seemed like it mattered to her. The take was personal, it was from someone's experience and perspective. Like it or not, she gave something of herself in it. Make your own magazine if you don't like it. Whenever I was in Czech Rep I grabbed those magazines. The layout, the effort put into it was already enough for me (even if I don't speak Czech, I got it). When Full Moon was in its infancy she asked me to do a CD insert “Extra Heaven” (outtakes from Paramount Styles “Heaven's Allright” LP). I was skeptical because I thought “who will care?” She wanted to do it, so we did it. I am glad we did. The point was not that anyone would care, it was only that she thought it was good enough to do something about. It wasn't about me, or even the band. I think it was about the idea of independent music. That something could still be worthwhile that is under the radar of popular culture. What I think of the most is all the bands whom you might never hear of because she won't be around to tell you about them, to champion them and make you aware of them. This is what will be missed. As well as an amazing person.
I hope what she did will inspire people to do the same, to make your own magazine, to write about things and actually create dialogue instead of passive acceptance... to make an effort to share something, about ourselves, about our opinions about what we love or don't love. And not just a tweet. Its a lot like making songs in a vaccum. Who will care about your songs? Who will care about your magazine? Who cares? Just do it. Jana did it. I am glad she did. And a lot of people cared. RIP.
